A whale can remember the voice of a companion for decades. A human being can invent a mathematical proof no one has ever imagined. A machine can generate an essay in seconds by detecting patterns across billions of pieces of text.
We call all three intelligent.
But what exactly are we naming when we use the word intelligence?
We tend to think of intelligence as something we possess. Some people have more of it, some have less. We measure it through tests, degrees, accomplishments, problem-solving skills and—increasingly—the performance of machines.
Beneath all of this is an assumption: Intelligence is one thing; it simply appears in different amounts and different forms.
But what if that assumption is wrong? What if intelligence isn’t a single quality at all, but a word we use to describe very different ways of responding to the world?
That question matters to more than philosophers and cognitive scientists. It matters to anyone trying to understand what it means to be human at a moment when machines can write, calculate, recognize patterns and carry on conversations that can feel surprisingly human.
Maybe the first step toward a more thoughtful understanding of intelligence is to let go of the idea that it has to have one definition.
The intelligence of a whale
Consider whales and dolphins. They remember, learn, communicate, co-operate, and navigate enormous distances. They form social relationships, and in some cases, pass learned behaviours from one generation to another.
It’s tempting to ask how intelligent they are compared with us. But that question may already put us on the wrong path.
We often treat human cognition as the measuring stick for every other form of intelligence. We ask whether an animal can use language, solve a puzzle, recognize itself or remember information. The closer its behaviour comes to ours, the more intelligent we tend to consider it. But another creature doesn’t need to become more like us to demonstrate intelligence.
A whale doesn’t need to write a novel to possess a sophisticated relationship with its environment. A dolphin doesn’t need to develop algebra to navigate a social world that we barely understand.
The better question might be whether another creature has developed its own way of meeting the demands of existence.
The whale doesn’t need to be a failed human mind; it may simply be a successful whale mind. That is a small change in language, but it opens up a much larger way of thinking. Instead of asking which creatures are closest to us, we can begin asking how different forms of life have learned to inhabit the world.
There may be many ways of being responsive to reality.
The human mind doesn’t stop at the skull
Human intelligence is just as difficult to isolate as the intelligence of a whale is. We tend to think of human intelligence as something that happens inside the brain, but much of what we call thinking depends on things outside us.
We write things down because we can’t remember everything. We use calendars because our internal sense of time is imperfect. We use maps because our brains can’t hold an entire landscape in view. We use language because thoughts often become clearer when we give them form.
We also rely on libraries, schools, computers, traditions, institutions and other people.
A mathematician working through a difficult problem with pencil and paper isn’t simply using a brain. The marks on the page become part of the thinking process.
Someone trying to remember a complicated schedule may rely on a phone. Someone learning a new language depends on teachers, dictionaries and conversations. A community preserves knowledge through stories and institutions.
Our intelligence is, therefore, not entirely contained within us but distributed.
In fact, much of what we think of as individual intelligence is inherited. We speak languages we didn’t invent and use mathematical concepts developed by people who died centuries ago. We rely on technologies created by strangers and live inside institutions constructed by generations before us.
Human intelligence is less like a possession and more like a conversation with the past. We inherit a cognitive world, modify it and pass it along.
When machines begin to think
Artificial intelligence (AI) makes the question of what intelligence is more complicated. Machine-learning systems can recognize patterns, generate language, analyze images, make predictions and perform tasks that require considerable cognitive effort. It’s understandable that we describe these systems as intelligent.
But there is an important difference between producing an intelligent-looking response and having an experience of the world. A machine can generate a description of grief without grieving. It can discuss loneliness without being lonely. It can produce a poem about mortality without knowing that it will die.
Does that mean machines are unintelligent? Not necessarily. It may mean that we’re using the same word for fundamentally different processes.
Human intelligence is embodied. We are organisms. We become hungry, tired, frightened, curious and attached. We remember people we love. We anticipate loss. Our thinking is inseparable from a body that will eventually cease to function.
Artificial intelligence operates differently. Its processes depend on computers, electricity, data, software, networks and human institutions.
The difference isn’t simply that one system is smarter than the other; they’re different kinds of systems.
That distinction may become increasingly important as AI becomes more sophisticated. We can become so impressed by what machines produce that we start confusing performance with experience.
Mindfulness invites us to slow down before making that leap. What is actually happening here? What do we know? And what are we simply projecting onto the machine because its language sounds familiar?
Intelligence doesn’t make us masters
There is another assumption worth questioning: We often imagine intelligence as the ability to control our environment.
Certainly, intelligence allows us to change the world. Humans build cities, cultivate crops, construct technologies and reshape landscapes. Artificial intelligence now participates in organizing information and influencing decisions.
But environmental change isn’t, by itself, intelligence. Fire changes a forest and rivers reshape valleys, just as hurricanes transform coastlines. None of these processes needs to be intelligent for the world to change.
What distinguishes intelligence, if anything does, might be the capacity to respond to information and alter conditions in pursuit of some end.
Even then, the boundaries remain blurry. The more broadly we define intelligence, the more things we can include within it. Eventually, almost everything becomes intelligent. And when a concept explains everything, it may no longer explain very much.
This is where mindfulness can offer something valuable. Mindfulness asks us to notice the categories through which we experience the world rather than immediately treating those categories as reality itself.
We say, “This is intelligent.” A mindful response might be: “What do I mean by this?”
We say, “That machine understands me.” We might pause and ask: “What evidence do I have of this understanding?”
We say, “Humans are the most intelligent species.” We might ask: “According to which measure?”
These aren’t merely semantic questions, because they reveal assumptions hidden inside ordinary language.
Separating intelligence and wisdom
Perhaps the most important distinction here is between intelligence and wisdom.
Human beings have developed extraordinary intellectual abilities. We’ve decoded genomes, walked on the moon, developed vaccines, created global communications networks and built machines capable of processing enormous quantities of information.
Yet none of this guarantees that we’ll use our abilities wisely. Intelligence can create a weapon as easily as a cure, build a bridge or construct a system of surveillance. It can expand our knowledge while leaving our judgment unchanged. Intelligence, then, isn’t necessarily a virtue.
We can be highly intelligent and profoundly unwise. Some of our greatest problems may arise because our technological abilities have developed faster than our ability to understand their consequences.
A mindful approach to intelligence requires something beyond cognitive performance. It requires attention. Attention to consequences. Attention to uncertainty. Attention to the difference between knowing something and understanding it. And attention to the possibility that our own categories may be inadequate.
Living with uncertainty
The deepest problem with our concept of intelligence is that we want certainty from it. We want to know which beings are intelligent and which are not. We want to rank species. We want to know whether machines are conscious, and want a clear boundary between minds and tools.
But nature rarely respects the boundaries we draw. Cognition may exist along many dimensions. Intelligence may take many forms. Consciousness may not fit neatly into the categories we currently possess.
This doesn’t mean that we should abandon distinctions. It means we should hold them with greater humility.
We don’t need to be the smartest beings in the room. We need to become more attentive to the room.
The whale, the human being and the machine-learning system may all respond to information in sophisticated ways. Yet their relationships to embodiment, experience, environment and meaning are profoundly different.
Intelligence isn’t a substance that flows through different systems. It may be a family of capacities that happen to overlap. Recognizing this can change how we understand ourselves.
We don’t need to be the smartest beings in the room. We need to become more attentive to the room. More attentive to the other forms of life surrounding us. More attentive to the technologies we create. More attentive to the assumptions hidden inside our language. More attentive to the difference between solving a problem and understanding why the problem matters.
The whale offers one kind of lesson. The machine offers another. Human beings stand somewhere between them, trying to understand both while struggling to understand ourselves.
Maybe the most intelligent response isn’t to insist that we already know what intelligence is, but to remain curious.
Because the moment we stop treating intelligence as a trophy and begin treating it as a question, we make room for something deeper than intelligence itself.
We make room for wonder.
