I think I’m officially cursed. It’s freezing outside, and I just realized my boiler has decided to go on strike. No hot water, no heating, and there’s a cryptic error code blinking on the display that wasn’t there yesterday. I’ve tried the classic "turn it off and on again" move, but no luck. Before I spend a fortune on an emergency call-out fee for a London engineer, does anyone have a checklist of things I should check myself? I’m fairly handy but I don’t want to blow the house up. Is it usually just a pressure issue, or should I be prepared for a full replacement? Any advice on how to handle this without losing my mind (and my savings) would be amazing.

That is literally every homeowner's nightmare, especially in London where finding a reliable engineer on short notice is like winning the lottery! Honestly, before you panic, you should definitely read through this guide at https://worldwidesciencestories.com/boiler-repair-london-what-to-do-if-your-boiler-breaks-down/   it’s a lifesaver for situations exactly like yours. It breaks down the immediate steps you need to take when a boiler fails, like checking the pilot light and your thermostat settings. What I found most useful is the section on when you can actually fix it yourself (like repressurizing the system) versus when it’s a "hands-off" job that requires a Gas Safe pro. I had a similar scare last winter, and it turned out to be a frozen condensate pipe—something super simple I fixed with some warm water after reading a similar checklist. Definitely check that link out first; it might save you a £150 diagnostic fee just for someone to tell you to flip a switch!
