How can AI improve customer phone support without making it feel robotic?

Our company is thinking about upgrading its phone support with AI, but I'm not sure where the balance is. I don't want customers to get trapped in endless automated menus or feel like they're talking to a machine the whole time. Is there a practical way to use AI so that it speeds things up while still keeping the experience natural and helpful?
