U.S. Citizens protesting ICE immigration officials in Minneapolis in January 2026 - The World Is Coming Apart: But We Can Save Our Human Family

OUR WORLD IS COMING APART AT THE SEAMS: But we can save it with kindness

Today, we’re living in a world where people’s needs are being cast aside.

In the United States, some of our political leaders are deliberately doing things that are making people’s lives more difficult. By doing so, they’re also destroying the foundational stones that have made the American way of life so effective when it comes to overcoming racism, ignorance and poverty, as well as meeting essential public health needs.

As a result, America has lost its leadership role in the world community.

We have a president who behaves as a dictator and has no regard for our Constitutional form of government. This is a human being who is delusional in his way of viewing himself, especially in relation to the world that we’re all attempting to survive. This is someone who still denies that he lost the U.S. presidential election in 2020. He’s also a pathological liar whom some psychiatric professionals publicly regard as too mentally unstable for any leadership role in the government.

The onslaught of ICE

We have a Constitutional form of government that’s predicated on the rule of law, but our current administration’s leadership is disregarding our due process rights. We have United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who abuse children and adults alike, regardless of whether those people are citizens or immigrants. These ICE agents are setting up more detention centres that are used to house immigrants and may be used to house others who aren’t supportive of our present government’s policies.

On a more positive note, many citizens are beginning to assert themselves in opposition to such practices, and with each passing day, this reaction against government abuse is gaining traction.

I believe the roadway is quickly beginning to run out in regard to what Trump has stood for during his season of deception and destruction. In its place, we have citizens and members of government who are speaking truth to power and standing up for the values that have made us stay true to our finer potential.

The States is just the tip of the iceberg

I find it painful to write an article like this when I know that our problems in America are only the tip of the iceberg. In other areas of the world, people are being slaughtered by self-interested governments. Children and families are starving and suffering from disease due to being denied basic needs such as water, electricity, medical care and food.

Tens of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip have suffered due to living in warlike conditions. In Sudan, an ongoing civil war has caused widespread famine and loss of life. In Yemen, years of conflict have led to famine and targeted attacks against thousands of citizens.

Let’s stick together to avoid coming apart

How can we allow such violations of basic regard for fellow members of our human family, and go forward as a species? The simple truth is that we can’t, and this isn’t really about supporting one political point of view or one political leader over another. It’s about speaking truth to power and living our truth with each breath we take.

The Dalai Lama has written:

Compassion and love are not a luxury; they are essential to our existence. Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. If we are to survive, human beings must develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. We must learn to work not just for our own self, family or nation, but for the benefit of all humankind.

To live in accordance with the Dalai Lama’s principles, we must speak truth to power each time we see behaviour that causes pain to another member of our human family.

Namaste.
