Man sitting on log beside lake - 3 Poems About Mindful Living, Including "To-Do List"

POEMS BY BOB ROWE: To-Do List, Talking With God and more

To-Do List

I was so sick of the list…
get up at 6,
make the kids lunch,
shower,
rush off to work,
stay focused,
look calm,
keep everyone happy,
race home,
cook dinner,
wash clothes,
pay bills…

Every day, the list seemed to get longer.
That’s why, for one day, I threw it away.
I turned off the phone,
left my computer at home,
sat barefoot under a tree,
stared at the sky, went to the lake,
swam and splashed and played,
lay on the grass, dried off in the breeze,
ate strawberry ice cream with sprinkles on top.
But still, I felt empty inside,
until I gazed at the sunset
and suddenly, decided to pray.

“Dear Lord,” I pleaded, “please show me the way.”
That’s when I suddenly knew, down deep in my soul,
how joyously grateful I am
for my day-to-day life,
for every breath that I take
and for all God gives me to do.

Talking With God

While teaching Sunday School
I asked a little girl,
“How often do you pray?”

“Enough,” she said.
“What’s enough?” I asked.

“Well,” she answered,
“I talk with God in the morning
and I pray again at night.
In between,
God is on his own.”

The Boy, The Worm and the Butterfly

A little boy,
a worm,
and a butterfly
met for tea
under a tree.

The boy said to the worm,
“Where have you been?
We haven’t seen you
for a while.”

“I’ve been relaxing
in the cool, moist dirt,”
said the worm.

The boy said to the butterfly,
“Where have you been?
We haven’t seen you
for a while.”

“I’ve been flying,
carried by the wind to beautiful places,”
said the butterfly.

The worm and the butterfly said to the little boy,
“Where have you been?
We haven’t seen you
for a while.”

“I’ve been having fun
playing with my friends in the park,”
said the boy.

Then the boy,
the worm
and the butterfly
became silent,
sitting under the tree.

Each was thinking,
“It’s too bad the other two
can’t be as lucky
as me.”
