There once was a wave who was very into being a wave! And when it saw other waves, it would compare itself to them and say: “Well, look how much bigger I am than the other waves! Surfers come from all over to ride me. And when I crash onto shore, I make my presence felt.”
This wave was filled with so much pride that it even thought life would be better if all the other waves just ceased to be! For a long time, it went on thinking and living in this vain manner until one day, a lovely dolphin swam right though its waters and said: “Behold, I have swum into your mighty being. Look how strong and powerful you are! I’m sure your strength and power are the envy of all the other waves!”
The wave’s ego again swelled with tremendous pride as it replied: “Indeed, no wave can compare with me. I’m the greatest wave that has ever existed!”
At this comment, the lovely dolphin chucked quietly to itself. It then said, “I have no doubt that you believe with great conviction that you’re superior to every other wave. But have you ever stopped for one moment to consider what you’re a part of and not what you’re separate from?”
Confused by this question, the wave grew silent just long enough for the lovely dolphin to expand on its thoughts:
Can’t you see that you’re not just a wave, but part of the ocean? Take a minute to look at the infinite sea of blue right in front of you! You are that! That is who you are. You aren’t just a wave. You’re so much more! You’re water in a vast sea of oneness. Who you think you are is but an illusion. Don’t confuse your temporary form with the sublime essence of who you really are!
Answer this question for me: Is it not more inspiring to acknowledge your authentic self as the eternal ocean than it is to identify yourself as a single hapless wave, bound by the chains of your own false sense of separateness?
Recognizing oneness and universal spirit
The wave remained silent, but for the first time in its life, it saw clearly just how things really were. Yes, it was indeed the ocean! And yet, somehow it now knew that who it was even transcended the ocean itself. In being the ocean, it was an expression of the same universal spirit found within all of creation.
In this moment, the wave grasped that this universal spirit had a presence that could be intuitively felt every time it looked up at the sky or happily merged with grains of sand while crashing onto shore. The wave could now see that this same divine essence, that elemental seed of oneness, was also present in all the other waves. It understood that they were all equal reflections of the same holy emptiness in the ocean of creation.
Beaming a humble smile, the wave stared adoringly at the lovely dolphin. With a tone of great reverence, the wave paid the dolphin homage with these words: “Venerable dolphin, it would be an honour if you would swim in my waters and merge your being with mine so that I may be filled by your boundless love, compassion and wisdom.”
The lovely dolphin cried out loud in the joyous way that only a dolphin can, as it excitedly repeated the mantra that would come to please all the Gods and Goddesses beyond time and space: “From this day forward, together we vow to help all remember that they are the ocean!”
