PRAYING FOR THE PEOPLE I SEE ON TV: Poetry by Max Reif

I pray for the people
I see on TV,
the ones having
a hard time
and the ones
trying to help:

for the news anchors,
who earnestly do their jobs,
but who also care,
you can tell.

For the doctors and nurses
interviewed on the front lines.

For Governors Cuomo and Newsom
as they give their press conferences,
where it’s easy to see their total focus
on serving their constituents.

It’s not even “I pray” as a volitional act, really.
The gratitude just flows out of me
like a river, into their eyes.
And it goes in, I can feel it!

You could tell me, “Television is
an impersonal, electronic medium,”

but I know otherwise
because Love
bridges all distances.
