A GLOBAL GROWTH MARKET: The current state of wind power in the world [infographic]

Last updated: November 13th, 2018

Despite the unfavourable market environment following the global financial crisis and the European debt crisis, the global wind power market continues to grow.

One of the main contributors to the industry’s growth in the past years was China. China’s installed wind power capacity grew 2,337 percent in the past five years. In 2010, it overtook the U.S. as the world’s largest wind energy market. China now has a larger installed wind power capacity than Germany and Spain combined. In 2011, the top 10 countries accounted for 86 percent of the total installed wind power capacity.

Despite it being the second largest wind power market, wind power accounted for no more than 1.2 percent of primary energy consumption in the U.S. in 2011. Denmark has the largest wind power capacity per capita. China and India are nowhere near the top 10.
