Horses

It is not enough for a man to know how to ride; he must know how to fall.  – Mexican Proverb

A stubborn horse walks behind you, an impatient horse walks in front of you, but a noble companion walks beside you.

It excites me that no matter how much machinery replaces the horse, the work it can do is still measured in horsepower…..even in this space age. And although a riding horse often weighs half a ton, and a big drafter a full ton, either can be led about by a piece of string if he has been wisely trained. This to me is a constant source of wonder, and challenge.    – Marguret Henry

Pigs

I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals. – Winston Churchill

I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it. – George Bernard Shaw

Birds

A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song. – Lou Holtz

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself. – David Herbert Lawrence

Cats

If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much. – Mark Twain

I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior. – Hippolyte Taine

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. – Robert A. Heinlein

Dogs

A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. – Josh Billings

The dog’s agenda is simple, fathomable, overt: I want. “I want to go out, come in, eat something, lie here, play with that, kiss you. There are no ulterior motives with a dog, no mind games, no second-guessing, no complicated negotiations or bargains, and no guilt trips or grudges if a request is denied. – Caroline Knapp

We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be – the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.” – Farley Mowat, Never Cry Wolf

General

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. – Mahatma Gandhi

Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That’s the problem. – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it’s such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her.” – Ellen DeGeneres

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.” – Alice Walker

The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion in the only guarantee of morality. – Arthur Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality

Animals never worry about Heaven or Hell. neither do I. maybe that’s why we get along. – Charles Bukowski, The Last Night of the Earth Poems

Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself. – James Anthony Froude, Oceana
