The Serenity Prayer

A Zen koan on acceptanceGod grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

– Reinhold Niebuhr

  1. I too spend time every day evaluating how things are going for me, and thinking of ways to improve. That?s OK. Maybe the best wisdom on all this is: the crazy ride I?m on right now is a full life in all its beautiful ness. I also remember as often as I can not to tie myself up in expectations.
    ?For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain.? ? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  2. I loved the Longfellow quote! It’s pure, simplistic and encompassing! When I’m able to just “let” I’m doing well with a smile on it!
    I came here searching for another quote, regarding acceptance. Which non verbatim was:
    “Total acceptance, is total forgiveness, or otherwise useless. To be present, you must accept everything, because it is.”
    Something like that. Though I like this one,as is!

    Tom
