Effective assigning is the key to getting a great article! Since writers are working for free, some may want complete freedom to write what they want, while others appreciate direction as part of their learning process. Only give as much detail as you feel comfortable giving.
Alternatively, you can let writers know what topics we're looking for and have them write up a query. Then post that or discuss with the editor you're working with.
HOW TO ASSIGN
- Match writer to the piece - know what topics the writer you're approaching has interest/knowledge in.
- Write up letter - include a clear theme statement, approach (first person, report, essay, etc.); kinds of information wanted (stats, historical background, human interest); questions that must be answered; additional data (for sidebars); copyright info (Creative commons licensing - Attribution + ShareAlike (by-sa); include lots of encouragement
- continue the editorial process with a follow up. Provide background info on The Mindful Word by pointing to the about the magazine page and submission guidelines
