From his grandfather’s hasty departure from Italy during the Second World War, to his early years as a priest in Argentina, and ultimately to his rise to leader of the Catholic Church, The Life of Pope Francis by Michael Frizell, tells the story of Jorge Mario Bergolio—the People’s Pope.

Opening with Pope Francis standing at the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica overlooking the square and thousands of adoring believers, The Life of Pope Francis unfolds through a series of reflections that offer a glimpse into some of Pope Francis’ earlier life experiences and how these might have influenced him and his work.

Like the man, The Life of Pope Francis, does not shy away from controversy. Rather, it boldly incorporates into the story those social, economic and political issues that most affected Pope Francis over the years; among them, the political unrest of 1970s Argentina, the behind-the-scenes manoeuvering during the papal conclave of 2005, and “… the ‘filth’ that has plagued the Holy Catholic Church…”

The Life of Pope Francis is done in the engaging and accessible comic book format and is told in the first person, adding an intimate, conversational tone. The writing and the artwork fuse skillfully to highlight the essence of Pope Francis—the man and the leader—his love of and undying devotion to God, and his humility and unwavering belief that we’re all equal. Told through the lens of Mr. Frizell’s personal admiration for Pope Francis, The Life of Pope Francis is the story of truth, faith, and above all, hope.
